Obesity has become a public health problem affecting all cultures, socioeconomic classes and all age groups, including children. The number of factors causing obesity is increasing day by day. The number of obese individuals is also increasing undeniably. Considering the statistical data, the number of patients who are operated on due to obesity and many metabolic diseases such as diabetes triggered by obesity is increasing, some of them are exposed to obesity without even being aware of it.
Environment: "The biggest factor in obesity is friends"
Prof Dr Abdulkadir Bedirli touched upon the importance of the relationship between obesity and the environment. Bedirli says: "In recent years, the environment has made people more obese. Friends, spouses, school and work life affect our habits. This topic was the subject of a study that evaluated 12 thousand people over 32 years. The interesting results from the research are:
Researchers have found that the biggest factor in becoming obese is friends. For example, close friendships increase the risk of obesity by 171 percent. These rates are 40 percent among siblings and 37 percent among spouses".
Dietary habits:
"School-age children get about 20 percent of their energy from sugary drinks"
Bedirli, who refers to the eating habits in obesity, says: "When it comes to eating habits, there are two different views on this issue. The first of these is the increase in the consumption of high-calorie industrialized foods and beverages. In many countries, including our country, school-age children consume about 20 percent of their energy with sugar. The other view is that the consumption of natural and healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables, legumes and grains decreases”.
Lack of physical activity
Bedirli says: "Lack of physical activity is among the most important factors that increase obesity. Western societies, including children, show an increasing tendency towards a sedentary lifestyle such as resting, watching TV, driving and going to school and doing less physical activity. Healthy eating While physical activity plays an important role in maintaining one's status, sedentary lifestyles are a risk factor for obesity and, in particular, heart diseases that it may develop".
Consumption frenzy
Bedirli says: “The ever-increasing desire to consume can lead you to obesity without being aware of it. According to the results of 4 economists, who handled 32 economic factors that changed with body mass index between 1990 and 2010, Walmart type hypermarkets were the strongest factor explaining the increase in body mass index and obesity, with a 17 percent explanation rate. The second factor that plays a role in the increase in obesity is the number of restaurants per capita with a 12.2 percent disclosure rate. Other factors that played a statistical role in weight gain were cigarette prices, which increased by 3.9 percent, while the rate of blue-collar jobs decreased with a disclosure rate of 3.3 percent".
